I could dance around this in so many ways but it wouldn’t be honest. Notae 2.0 is worth more than $15.
After thinking about it for a while, I think it needs to be priced in its class. That said, I want to reward those that have supported the program as far so while the price is going up, the serial numbers will not change and your version 1.x numbers will work for 2.0.
Why bother, one might ask? When you look at a car that everyone’s going crazy over and it’s priced at $12K, what’s your first thought? “Piece of crap. You gotta wonder how they’re making ‘em so cheap.” Yet, if you look at a car priced at $18K or $22K, then you give it some credit and start to actually look at it. People do the same with software. While I’m happy selling it at $15, the market is selling things with an average price of $35/40. If you look at them (especially Mori and Yojimbo) and compare to Notae 2.0 you’ll see that there’s little difference. Each of us has some give-and-take, but the core is the same. Why are they worth more? They’re not, really, and that’s one of the many reasons I made Notae: I wasn’t going to pay $39 for something I could write myself (in hindsight, this past year of my life might have been worth more than $39).Read more

I’m looking to have Notae 2.0 translations done in time for a release this upcoming Monday. Below is the the current status of each translation I’d like to include.

If there’s a language you know and want to offer, I’d be happy to include it. I’m handing out license keys like candy, but can also work out some money as well if that’s neccessary. I do not have what the translation houses want (they want about $200 a language, if you can believe it), but can manage something. If you can help, please hit the contact link at the top of the page and let me know. Thanks.

Sorry for missing the expiration date on this one. To self-update, move the date to 2007-01-14 and start Notae. Wait for it to start downloading and then move the date back. Or, download it below.
This is probably the final beta before I start calling RCs. Some things will have to wait until 2.1 at this point. I need to release sometime, and it’s looking pretty clean aside from one or two drag-and-drop issues with tags (that about five people will run into, really, because most folks use tag autocompletion).
If you’re waiting to see what 2.0 looks like, please get this and let me know if there’s anything crazy that doesn’t work the way you’d expect. Now’s the time to change it…
2.0b4 (310)
Bugs Fixed Since 2.0b3
- Tag fields no longer require an extra return to save.
- Dragging a tag to the table view now updates the header and info panel.
- Added an “All” item at the top of each column in the tag browser.
- The tag browser now filters out unused tags in the first column.
- Resolved an issue where windows would not properly rotate with cmd-`.
- Resolved issue where the scroll bar would be clipped on new documents until the header was hidden then shown.
- Resolved an issue where the relative date cell would display white text even when not key.
- Resolved an issue relating to the Notes menu and notes without titles.
- The split view now collapses properly to hide the table view.
New Features Since 2.0b3
- Notae can now import URL clippings (webloc files) as web archives (drag a URL to the desktop to create one).

The third beta expired today, I know. I’m going to have something out later today. Check back in a few hours or tomorrow morning.
If you need to use it right now just set your clock back for a moment, open Notae, and then fix the clock.

Until the 25th, Notae and a whole lot of other software is 20% off over at Mac Santa.
And yes, the developers are getting paid on this one. ;)

I just pushed out 2.0b2. The first beta will expire in a few days (the 15h) so you should get the new one if you’re using the betas. It should auto-update to the new one (just tested it) if you have that turned on.

Head on over to the development site and get a copy of the program. If you want to file bugs, the instructions are on the front page of that site. If you just want to see what’s changed, there’s a change log available as well (delta log is below).
I just posted 2.0b3 to fix a resizing problem with text notes. Damned Interface Builder busting up my NIBs …Read more

Just to clear up some confusion for many of the folks emailing me: the beta really is an open beta. The registration is just to file bugs. Now, of course, I’d love to have everyone filing bugs on 2.0, but it’s not strictly required. Just hit the development site and download a copy to start playing with it. That copy will expire on December 15th.
Also, if you’re testing, it would be very good to subscribe to the beta mailing list as well. It’s linked off the main development page.

I’m going to try something that I probably should have tried a while back (for more that just the 1.0 version). While I’m wrapping up Notae 2.0, I’d like to get some people that would be willing to spend a little time running over some beta versions of it and help out a little with identifying bugs and quirks.
Now that Notae is a bit ahead of all the other notepads I was looking at ages ago when I started, I want to bring it ahead of the current crop of note-takers and light scrapbooks. No, I’m not talking about adding the kitchen sink to it and making it yet another scrapbooking application, but I do think that in the process of developing notes it does often come to the point where one would want to keep another document handy, be it a PDF or web page, and that Notae can handle that as well.
The trick is making it seamless. Right now, my little hack to get PDFs and WebArchives working is pretty seamless, and I’m quite happy with that. You don’t even know it can do it until you try, and then it just works as you’d expect. I’d like to get that for the rest of the features I want to add. For that, I’d like some eyes.
The first posted download wouldn’t start for some folks because of a changed framework. Just redownload and it should work.Read more
